In the build-up to AFC Bournemouth’s first match in European competition, Adam Smith was rightly receiving plenty of plaudits.
Various outlets highlighted the 35-year-old as a beacon for the club’s rise – understandable given his connection to Cherries goes back to their League One days.
Add to that his own career starting by trying to break through into the Tottenham Hotspur first team, and it makes a compelling story to see him finally get his chance in Europe in the twilight of his playing days.
When he led the team out at Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastián, it marked Smith’s 430th competitive match in an AFC Bournemouth shirt.
