The UK’s major bookmakers all have AFC Bournemouth listed among the favourites to win the Europa League. Not a sentence I ever thought I would write.
Then again, there have been quite a few sentences written about this club over the past 20 years which, at the time, felt unbelievable to write.
Marco Rose’s men are, at the time of writing, priced up at 9/1 to lift the trophy in Frankfurt in May. This is a tournament which contains the likes of a host of European giants and historic names like Juventus, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, Celtic, Benfica and Lyon.
But perhaps it should not come as a huge surprise. Premier League clubs have enjoyed plenty of success in Europe in recent years and, given their resources, they can match up against any of the sides in the competition.
